The History of Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang Temple History – Lempuyang Temple is one of the older and holy temple in Bali Island. This temple is located at Bisbis Hill, Abang District, Karangasem Regency. Most of the tourist who are visiting surely have known this island. This temple is well-known for its great gate (or called the gate to heaven).

Base on Kutara kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul Book narrated that Sang Hyang Parameswara carried the mountains in Bali from India (Jambhudwipa) to Mahameru Mount. The pieces of Mahameru Mount was brought to Bali and divided into three big parts and a few small parts.

The middle part was made into Batur Mount and Rinjani Mount, while its peak into Agung Mount (the highest mount in Bali Island. Several the smaller fragments become the slopes of mountains in Bali that were related to each other.

Those mountains are Tapsahi, Pengelengan, Siladnyana, Beratan, Batukaru, Nagaloka, Pulaki, Puncak Sangkur, Bukit Rangda, Trate Bang, Padang Dawa, Andhakasa, Uluwatu, Sraya and Gunung Lempuhyang. The mountains were believed to be the palace of the gods to guard Bali Island.

In Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul Book was also stated that Sang Hyang Parameswara assigned Sang Hyang Agnijayasakti (his son) down to Bali Island and maintained the welfare of Bali Island. And occupied on Lempuhyang Mount with other gods.

However, need to remember that the history of Lempuyang Temple haven’t known for sure. Caused there are still many others history version of this temple.
